The Gems of Junk Wax, Pt. 9: 1993 Donruss #261 Brent Mayne

This picture on this card is a different type of "action shot".

Fifteen-year MLB veteran Brent Mayne is upset about something, so much so that he has to be restrained by one of the men in blue. He's got his mask off and everything. Is he arguing with another umpire? Is he trying to get at another player? Could this shot have been taken seconds before a brawl?

We'll never know.

1993 Donruss is a decent set (which is better than I can say for most junk wax). Donruss took a page from Upper Deck's book in designing their '93 release. A good, clean card front devoted to showcasing the picture, and a large action shot for the back of the card. Donruss can't compete with UD's photography, but it's obvious that they made an attempt to copy their design.

This card, however, could've fit right into the '93 Upper Deck set and you'd never know. A fine "action" picture that was typical of UD in the era (which I've mentioned before).

I had to put this card on the GOJW list. Otherwise, Brent Mayne might've taken a charge at me.
