The (Second) Dime Box Frankenset, Page 2: Numbers 10-18

Frankenset Page #52 WINNER -- 1972 Topps #464 Jim Roland (11 votes)

Once again, the blogosphere succeeded in making me happy.

I badly wanted the '72 Jim Roland to win last week's page because it just oozes so much pure joy -- I figured he would, but we've had bigger surprises before in the frankenset. Thankfully, y'all didn't let me down: Roland took an early lead and topped the page, collecting 11 of the 32 total votes en route to the victory. The '91 Dwight Smith (7 votes) and '71 Fritz Peterson (6 votes) were the closest also-rans.

I'm happy as Roland (that needs to be a phrase) to add him to the Gallery of Frankenset Champions.

We flip back to the front of the binder with this week's page -- the Random Number Generator gifted us with #2 this week, so we'll be taking a look at that early page of the frankenset (#s 10-18) here tonight.

Let's meet the hopefuls.

2017 Stadium Club #10 Danny Santana

I'm a sucker for a good dugout shot.

2018 Stadium Club #11 Tzu-Wei Lin

I'm also a sucker for panoramas.

2000 Topps Gallery #12 Ray Lankford

If you hate Mike Scioscia, then this card's for you.

1991 Topps #13 Mariano Duncan

I freely admit that double play cards can run together after a while, but this one has always stood out for the curiously matching red jerseys and the Ozzie Smith cameo.

2015 Topps Opening Day #14 Michael Taylor

Topsy turvy.

1994 Topps #15 Jay Bell

Double dip thrills.

2007 Upper Deck #16 Alvin Colina

Not a bad card for a dude whose big league career lasted exactly two games(!).

2016 Stadium Club #17 Raul Mondesi

It still boggles my mind that Raul Mondesi made his major league debut in the 2015 World Series -- which the Royals won, obviously.

1992 Donruss Triple Play #18 Eric Anthony

I wondered if the '74 Derrel Thomas was the most zoomed-out card ever a few pages ago, but I think this one has it beat.

That's it for this week's page. The polls are now on the sidebar.

Happy voting!

Santana giving or getting (I don't know which one he is!) the stink eye!!

It was a close one for me between Mondesi and the military in the background who cares about the non mention-able rookie on the 07 UD. My vote salutes the latter.

Well I'm absolutely votng for Tzu-Wei Lin.

I always figured the Duncan card depicts spring training action. It looks like a real grass field which neither team had in 1990. Also, both teams in red back then would not have happened in regular season action, I don't think.

Fun, divergent collection here. I never gave thought to the oddity of the dueling red jerseys in the Duncan card and "O.Smith" on Ozzie's jersey serves as a reminder that the Cards had a trios of unrelated Smiths on the roster from 1990-92 (Bryn and Lee were the others).

However, I voted for the Eric Anthony due to finding it so profoundly odd. It almost feels as though it was a setup to multiple exposure that got aborted.

One of the easiest decisions in a long time. Colina gets my vote.

Military background, no doubt!
