Dime Box Heroes: No one is safe

1999 Upper Deck Century Legends #S1 Babe Ruth SAMPLE

I received some good news a few days ago.

Normally, the big card shows near where I live are only held in March and November. The National coming to town in August of last year was a pleasant exception.

That usually results in a bit of a "card show drought" during the summer. But I am happy to report that they're holding a third show in the summer this year. A bonus show, if you will, on June 30th.

It's already marked on my calendar.

I'm already looking forward to digging through those dime boxes in a few weeks. I've already shown the spectacular finds this show can hold.

There's no question that this show has the best dime boxes of any I've attended. The variety doesn't get any better. Everyone from Nolan Ryan to Chase Utley to Ben Davis is represented.

No one is safe, not even arguably the most influential ballplayer in the history of the game. Nope, not even "The Babe" is prone to being thrown into a dime box.

But this one isn't just a regular old Babe Ruth card. It's a sample.

I'm not sure what the deal was with the whole "sample" thing in the '90s. It was a bit before my time as a collector, although I do remember a couple of my Becketts offering a couple sample-like cards as an incentive to buy the magazine.

Personally, this is one of my favorite cards of "The Babe". His weight started to balloon after he was dealt to the Bronx, but this shot captures a still-skinny Ruth in a Yankees uniform.

It's certainly a rare sight.

Like I always say, you never know what you'll find in a dime box. Nothing represents the history of the game quite like a bunch of dime cards. Card shows never cease to give me my "fill".

Needless to say, I can't wait until June 30th.

That's funny. I just picked up this exact card in an out-of-town dime box a few days ago. I agree; it's a fantastic card, SAMPLE or no.
