The (Second) Dime Box Frankenset Bracket: The Play-Ins (Pt. 1)

And so it begins.

The good news is that the Second Dime Box Frankenset Bracket is here, my friends. The bad news is that some of our frankenset champions will be sent home before anything really gets underway. In order to narrow the 74 winners down to a bracket-friendly 64 slots, the champs with the 20 lowest weekly vote totals have to survive a play-in round in order to advance to the big bracket (which can be seen here, for anyone interested in following!).

I'll reveal the first five play-in matchups this week and the other five next week so things aren't too overwhelming right off the bat. Voting will be similar as the usual process, only instead of voting once per page you'll now cast individual votes for multiple head-to-head matchups each week. Again, much thanks to everyone who took the time to vote over the many weeks of frankenset pages -- now it's up to you to decide who, at the end of it all, will join Billy Cowan as the (Second) Frankenset King.

But let's not get too ahead of ourselves now: here's a look at our initial batch of play-in battles.

Play-In Seed #1 (Page 42) -- 1992 Stadium Club #376 Greg Gagne

VS.

Play-In Seed #20 (Page 66) -- 1991 Upper Deck #587 Kurt Stillwell

#2 (Page 53) -- 1991 Score #475 Andy Van Slyke

VS.

#19 (Page 59) -- 1995 Score #525 Kent Mercker

#3 (Page 63) -- 1993 Topps #565 Jerald Clark

VS.

#18 (Page 7) -- 2008 Bowman Prospects #BP58 Scott Van Slyke

#4 (Page 14) -- 1998 Topps #119 Orlando Merced

VS.

#17 (Page 5) -- 1973 Topps #38 Mike Epstein

#5 (Page 24) -- 1970 Topps #213 Andy Etchebarren

VS.

#16 (Page 3) -- 1995 Stadium Club #24 Julian Tavarez

With that, the Second Frankenset Bracket is underway! The polls are now on the sidebar.

Happy voting!

One of my favorite cards out of all of these play-ins is the Jerald Clark... and it doesn't look like it's gonna make it to the tourney.

I ended up accidentally voting for the ones that have the lowest number of votes from the pairs!

2 Van Slykes in the opening round?!?! Had to vote for them both.
