The dime box frankenset, Page 1: Numbers 1-9

The results of final frankenset page are in.

Win -- 1991 Topps #659 Oscar Azocar (16 votes)

Place (tie) -- 1978 Topps #661 Grant Jackson, 1991 Upper Deck #666 Mickey Hatcher (8 votes each)

Show -- 2011 Topps #658 Mitch Maier (6 votes)

The voting on our last frankenset page wasn't as close as I expected. Azocar's brilliant 1991 Topps issue took 16 of the 39 total votes, twice as many as his next closest competitors. I grappled between Azocar and the comedic Mickey Hather, and, although I voted Hatcher in the end, Azocar's victory didn't disappoint me in the slightest.

He's a two-time winner, and the champion of the 74th and final page in this frankenset.

But, as I mentioned last week, the last page does not mark the end of our weekly matchups.

Since I didn't start this whole voting thing until about a third of the way into this series, we'll be going back to the beginning and crowning victors from the first 200 or so cards in the frankenset.

I have posted these pages before (including Page 1 over two years ago), but they've either changed a lot since then and/or I've filled empty slots that had been present in the past. (This week's page, for example, has only two of the same cards since that original posting.)

So, without further ado, it gives me great pleasure to flip back to Page 1 of the frankenset binder and introduce our first nine nominees.

1988 Upper Deck Promos #1 DeWayne Buice

The frankenset opens with the very first card ever printed by the likes of Upper Deck.

2014 Topps #2 Jhonny Peralta

Double dipping with last year's Topps.

2012 Topps #3 Jaime Garcia

A fantastic throwback jersey honoring the Negro League's St. Louis Stars.

1995 Leaf #4 Damion Easley

Turning two over a helpless baserunner.

1960 Topps #5 Wally Moon

All hail The Unibrowed One!

2013 Topps Update #US-6 Joel Peralta

I don't even know where to begin with these '70s Rays faux-backs.

1992 Upper Deck #7 Roberto Hernandez

"What do you call that haircut?"

1997 Fleer #8 Chris Hoiles

Safe or out?

1972 Topps #9 Stan Williams

The first page closes with one of the earliest examples of the coveted night card.

The polls are now on the sidebar.

Happy voting!

  1. I'm glad this isn't the end! I look forward to voting every Sunday afternoon!

On a different note... I never would have guessed those two cards of Azocar were the same person. Crazy what a few pounds and a mustache can do for a person.

  2. Love this "Frankenset" idea. Might have to build one myself.

Stan Williams and that creepy gaze for the win!
