#8 (Page 50) -- 1994 Stadium Club #448 Erik Pappas (18 votes)

#4 (Page 54) -- 1996 Collector's Choice #484 Rex Hudler (26 votes)

def.

#3 (Page 35) -- 1995 Upper Deck #312 Steve Buechele (12 votes)

#7 (Page 33) -- 1963 Topps #294 Bill Rigney (23 votes)

def.

#2 (Page 74) -- 1992 Upper Deck #666 Bob Ojeda (17 votes)

Not much nail-biting last week: most of the eventual winners led from start to finish.

Even the two upsets (Neagle and Rigney) were decided fairly handily, and the closest matchup was actually the #1-vs.-#8, with the classic Rudy Meoli escaping by a few votes. I guess I'm somewhat of a hypocrite too, in that I spent part of the last week trying to defend my dislike for Field of Dreams...and yet that '93 UD Neagle made the frankenset because of its distinct Field of Dreams vibe (and I have a feeling that's the exact reason it's so popular).

That's the frankenset for you -- sometimes it makes me eat my words.

And so we've come to the Sweet 16 -- given that there's only eight total matchups remaining, I'm dividing them in half, showing the matchups from the Cowan & Alvarado regions this week, Bevacqua & Palmer regions next week.

First up, from the Cowan Region...

#1 (Page 68) -- 1972 Topps #611 Rich Reese

VS.

#5 (Page 58) -- 1996 Collector's Choice #522 John Smiley

#2 (Page 10) -- 1992 Studio #86 Jose Lind

VS.

#6 (Page 6) -- 1999 Fleer SI Greats of the Game #53 Joe Rudi

And from the Alvarado Region...

#9 (Page 23) -- 1960 Topps #204 Ryne Duren

VS.

#12 (Page 55) -- 1991 Upper Deck #492 Geno Petralli

#2 (Page 45) -- 1993 Pinnacle #404 Bob Zupcic

VS.

#3 (Page 13) -- 1989 Upper Deck #117 Gary Pettis

That's it for this week's matchups. The polls are now on the sidebar.

Happy voting!

  2. I like the Neagle card despite my own ambivalence regarding Field of Dreams. I think I like it in part because it reminds me of Homer Simpson appearing out of the bushes to talk to the Flanders family next door.

  3. I'm with Mike. Putting Lind and Rudi against each other is rough.

I would've liked the ivy card more if it had been a Cub. (At least I think it's Wrigley, though I could be wrong.)

  4. It's not hypocrisy. It's just your collection and tastes. And I had to go with Rudi over Lind.
