Gems of Junk Wax Bracketology: The Sweet 16 (Pt. 4)

Well, this is it.

The last round of "Sweet 16" voting is upon us. Your voices will decide who the final two participants in the "Elite Eight" will be.

Voting on this region will close this Thursday, June 13th, at 11:59 PM.

Let's meet the contestants.

#5 -- 1992 Topps #40 Cal Ripken Jr.

VS.

#8 -- 1987 Topps #653 Kevin Mitchell RC

It's like deja vu all over again.

In the last round of voting, the '88 Donruss Ripken Family "gem" lost out to a worthy competitor in the iconic '87 Topps Bo Jackson rookie.

And, wouldn't you know it, Cal Jr. is up against yet another powerful '87 Topps rookie card this time around with the Mitchell.

The infamous Billy Ripken "Rick Face" error has already punched his ticket to the "Elite Eight". Will Cal Jr. join him?

Only the votes will tell.

He certainly has his work cut out for him against Mr. Mitchell.

#2 -- 1989 Upper Deck #755 Jim Abbott RC

VS.

#14 -- 1992 Stadium Club #520 Wade Boggs

This matchup couldn't have played out much better.

Both of these contestants are personal overproduction-era favorites of mine.

In fact, I've always considered the Abbott to be the greatest rookie card ever printed. At the same time, though, the Boggs may well be the greatest celebration shot the hobby has ever seen.

I'd have to grapple with this one for a bit if I were in on the voting process.

I'm sure it's the same for some of you.

The victors from these two matchups will face off against each other in the much-awaited "Elite Eight". Polls are now up on the sidebar.

Happy voting!
