Gems of Junk Wax Bracketology: Victors from the Terrific 32 (Pt. 2)

The votes have been tallied.

As of right now, we're halfway through the "Terrific 32" in this tournament. Much like the last region, none of these matchups proved to be especially nail-biting.

Most were pretty much decided from the get-go.

Still, let's take a look at who this region will be sending into the "Sweet 16".

#9 seed -- 1988 Fleer #582 Tim Flannery (18 votes)

def.

#16 seed -- 1987 Topps Traded #22T Ron Cey (13 votes)

This was far and away the closest matchup from this region.

Early on in the voting, Mr. Flannery jumped out to a heavy lead. For the most part, it looked like the victory was in the bag.

In the waning hours, however, votes for the Cey began to steadily increase. "The Penguin" made quite a last-ditch effort.

In the end, though, it proved to be all for naught. While it ended with a slim five-vote difference, the Flannery held a fairly comfortable lead the whole time.

Onto the "Sweet 16" it goes.

#12 -- 1991 Topps #760 Benito Santiago (26 votes)

def.

#4 -- 1990 Score Rookie/Traded #100T Eric Lindros RC? (5 votes)

As it happens, the other three matchups in this region were absolute blowouts.

All of the last three victors won by twenty or more votes.

While it wouldn't be as easy of a decision for me, I pretty much knew the '91 Topps Santiago would emerge victorious in this matchup without much of a fight.

I just didn't think it'd be this big of a massacre.

#11 -- 1987 Classic Yellow #124 Andre Dawson (26 votes)

def.

#3 -- 1989 Scoremasters #22 Mark Grace (6 votes)

Congrats, Mr. Dawson.

After an awfully decisive victory, you are now the last Cub standing in this tournament.

#7 -- 1991 Topps #455 Walt Weiss (25 votes)

def.

#2 -- 1989 Score #645 Randy Johnson RC (5 votes)

When a rookie card of "The Big Unit" gets taken out by that big of a margin, you know you've got a special card on your hands.

As is the power of 1991 Topps, I guess.

This region is shaping up to have quite a competitive "Sweet 16", I must say...

#9 -- 1988 Fleer #582 Tim Flannery vs. #12 -- 1991 Topps #760 Benito Santiago

#7 -- 1991 Topps #455 Walt Weiss vs. #11 -- 1987 Classic Yellow #124 Andre Dawson

Sorry, Padre fans. You're going to have to decide between a few of your beloved Friars come "Sweet 16" time.

You'll have plenty of time to mull it over.

Look for the next batch of "Terrific 32" matchups later tonight.

And, again, a big round of thanks goes out to everyone who has taken the time to vote in this tournament thus far.

You've made it a resounding success for the blog.
