The dime box frankenset, Page 11: Numbers 91-99

So...after about seven months of waiting, I'm finally ready to declare a winner from Page #10 of my Dime Box Frankenset.

Win -- 1995 Pinnacle #83 Milt Thompson (12 votes)

Place -- 1991 Score #85 Dan Pasqua (11 votes)

Show -- 1982 Fleer #86 Shooty Babitt (9 votes)

It was a long time coming, but Milt Thompson and his beach ball slam dunk eked out a one-vote over Dan Pasqua's sweet Sox throwback in this page, taking 12 of the 47 total voted to earn the victory. I'm not 100 percent sure on this, but I think I was one of the nine who voted for Mr. Babitt, because how could I possibly go against a name like Shooty Babitt?

Nevertheless, Thompson is more than deserving of the crown.

It's been a while since I've done one of these frankenset posts, so I thought I'd go through a general rundown of the process for anyone who is new to the blog and/or needs a refresher on this frankenset business.

Basically, I've comprised a 666-card frankenset -- nearly complete, save for about six or seven slots -- of cards from my many mini-collections, cards that make me laugh, or cards that are just plain interesting. None of the players represented in this frankenset are part of my list of guys in my standard team binders, which gives those non-binder guys a time to shine and gives myself a creative way to enjoy cards that wouldn't otherwise fit into my collection.

Every week, I'll post a page of nine new nominees. What I ask my readers to do is to vote on their single favorite card from each week's page on the poll on the sidebar of this blog. The card that receives the most votes wins the round and gets thrown into the big Frankenset Bracket Extravaganza that I'll hold once we've run through all the pages in my binder. (There's only a little over a dozen left!)

So, with that in mind, here's the nine newest frankenset hopefuls...enjoy!

1995 Upper Deck Minors #91 Roger Bailey

A card that captures the true spirit of the minor leagues, both front and back.

1994 Stadium Club #92 Chris Turner

Safe at home amid the dust cloud.

1997 Upper Deck #93 Ismael Valdes

Fun on Camera Day at Chavez Ravine.

2014 Topps Update #US-94 Tuffy Gosewisch

Nice horizontal shot, a Kung Fu Panda cameo, and a big-leaguer named Tuffy Gosewisch...what more do you need?

1999 Stadium Club #95 Ray Lankford

Throwing it back to the Negro League's St. Louis Stars.

1993 Stadium Club #96 Joe Oliver

Out at the plate!

1973 Topps #97 Willie Montanez

A prime example of the odd, often off-center beauty of '73 Topps.

1994 Upper Deck #98 Kent Hrbek

Let's hope he's not ordering Domino's.

1998 Fleer Tradition #99 Troy O'Leary

We close this week's page with some sweet turn-of-the-century Red Sox duds.

The polls are now on the sidebar.

Happy voting!

  4. I've had that Roger Bailey card since 1995, and I've loved it the whole time... Had to VOTE BAILEY!

  5. All great - I think Hrbek is more of a local guy than a national chain guy, he's probably getting a Parkway Pizza.

  7. Agreed with Tim B. I've missed these posts.

This is a really tough choice. I like the Joe Oliver card because its a Reds card, I like the Willie Montanez card because it's vintage, and the Hrbek card is just ... well, it's just Hrbek.

I'm gonna have to go with Hrbek on this one.
