Gems of Junk Wax Bracketology: Victors from the Final Four

The long awaited day is finally here.

Well, almost.

Tonight, voting to determine the ultimate king from "The Gems of Junk Wax" will begin. It should be an absolute blast.

For now, though, let's take a look at who you'll be deciding between in tonight's championship polls.

Here's who emerged victorious in last week's "Final Four" voting.

#8 -- 1987 Topps #170 Bo Jackson RC (18 votes)

def.

#9 -- 1991 Topps #170 Carlton Fisk (15 votes)

I'll admit, this one was a bit of a surprise to me.

After all, I was banking on Mr. Fisk to win the whole darn tournament. It's certainly one of my personal favorite "gems" of the overproduction era.

I thought it'd be close, but I expected Fisk to emerge victorious here.

How very wrong I was.

Voting was indeed neck-and-neck, but "Bo" eventually pulled out a slim three-vote victory.

Since many of today's collectors grew up cherishing '87 Topps, I can certainly see why. Jackson is definitely the face of that particular checklist, if not the overproduction era as a whole.

Given all that, I guess a championship appearance in this tournament seemed like destiny for Bo Jackson.

#12 -- 1991 Topps #760 Benito Santiago (18 votes)

def.

#8 -- 1987 Topps #653 Kevin Mitchell RC (15 votes)

I had a feeling Mr. Santiago would go deep into this tournament.

I just didn't think he'd make it this far.

From the looks of it, Benito Santiago's glorious 1991 Topps issue has quite the following amongst collectors. It far exceeded my expectations.

And, with an 18-to-15 victory over the magnificent '87 Topps Kevin Mitchell rookie, he successfully secured a spot in the championship round. (Coincidentally, both matchups ended in 18-to-15 vote decisions.)

So, thanks to your voting, we're looking at a "Bo" vs. "Benito" pairing in the long awaited championship round.

The polls will commence tonight.

Until then, let's give a big round of applause to both of our championship contestants.

They certainly deserve it.

  1. Cool this is the matchup I was rooting for. I do love the Mitchell, but I think the Fisk is a little bit overrated. His 77 Topps is much better in my opinion, but the 91 is still a great card though.
